The Knicks are one game away from the Finals while OKC and San Antonio are going blow-for-blow in the West. We talk biggest surprises, superstar performances, coaching adjustments, and who actually has the best shot to win it all. The NBA playoffs just keep getting crazier.

SPEAKER_00

I like don't I like don't remember how to do this.

SPEAKER_01

This is a deja vu, I swear.

SPEAKER_00

I like I haven't done this in forever. Welcome back to the lunchroom. It's uh yeah, it's been a while. Um here with my friend Haley today. Um we're here to talk about the um conference finals that are happening right now. Insane. Insane. Crazy basketball has been going on.

SPEAKER_01

I know. I can't believe the Knicks are up for real. I can't. Yeah, New York baby!

SPEAKER_00

Let's go! Oh my god, I've been so hyped for this. Like I've been like- If you've seen me out, I've been acting a fool.

SPEAKER_01

I know, dead ass.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, I I I probably have give I've probably given like out like probably 10 plus shots per game.

SPEAKER_01

You've given me many. Many. I mean, listen, I answered what he's pub.

SPEAKER_00

I have cause for celebration though.

SPEAKER_01

Like we've no no no, because usually like the Knicks are so unserious.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and we've been terrible for so long. Like the majority of my life has just been like us being ass.

SPEAKER_01

And even like whenever you guys have a good season, like you guys just blow it. Like, and it's early, like last year was terrible. Oh my god, that you guys had high hopes.

SPEAKER_00

That game one still haunts me to this day. Like, look, we had the lead, we had the lead, like not like what, under two minutes or something, and then the f Alabama! Stupid ass little choke celebration.

SPEAKER_01

Now they're so bad. They're so bad.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, and they don't even have their first round pick this year because they traded it to the Clippers.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. But yeah, so it's back to the Knicks.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I'm so happy to be up. And cat the Cavs suck. The Cavs Yeah, terrible.

SPEAKER_01

You were going through easy no matter what.

SPEAKER_00

No, yeah. I mean, even if we played Detroit, like Durin has been horrible during the playoffs, and he's all he was all in B3, so they're gonna have to pay him. Right, which is bad for them. But fortunate. Like, yeah, like I think we were eating them out. Because our offense right now is unstoppable.

SPEAKER_01

And even like just like the pace of the game, I feel like overall, like, there's no like frantic ever. Like, even if like whenever they're down late, it's just like they play their game and they make defensive stops.

SPEAKER_00

You saw you saw game one. And down 22 minutes with like seven minutes in the game left, and we came back and went in overtime.

SPEAKER_01

It's like you're never you can never count the Knicks out as of now. But like in the past, I feel like it's been so terrible.

SPEAKER_00

Like you can count them out. But honestly, I think the big the biggest difference has definitely been the coaching chase. This is basically more or less the same roster from last year.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly, exactly. That'd be dope that if Mike Brown brought home like a chip in his first year. No, yeah, that'd be. He would go down as like Knicks fans will never forget him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, listen, listen, Tibbs, Tibbs, I love you, man. Like he brought this city back to relevance after we were terrible for so long. But man, we hit our ceiling last year with him. Because like it took in game three being down 0-2, like in Indiana with Brunson in foul trouble, for him to finally be like, Alright, let's let's take a look at some of these guys on this bench.

SPEAKER_01

Right, da-da. I'm trying not to swear. Like, no, but no, for real. I completely agree.

SPEAKER_00

Shamit had did not see the court all season last year until that game, really.

SPEAKER_01

Mike Brown really works out the rotation. Like, and he times it very well. And he puts it, like, I feel like his subs right now that he has going on is like perfect for this lineups are like really good. Cleveland. Because the whole time Cleveland's playing, like, they're playing up to New York versus trying to like set a pace for the game and like control games.

SPEAKER_00

He's been coaching circles around Kenny Atkinson. Like, did you see what he had to say about Harden after game after game one?

SPEAKER_01

I didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Cause um, so basic cause like the comeback was mainly led by Brunson like running those plays on like on Harden, like getting switched onto him. And Harden got cooked by Brunson during that fourth quarter. And Kenny Atkinson's like, yeah, like uh he's like, I'm not gonna take him out. Like, he's no, he's one of our best players. Like, it's like a run like that happens, like you either gotta take him out or we gotta make some adjustments.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, exactly. Call timeout. Yeah, well, yeah, didn't take the time out with like two left. Right, that's like so frustrating to me. Like, whenever I watch coaches, like they go on like a 9-0 run, and you're not taking that time out turns into a 15-0 run.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I honestly like and I I said I told someone this the other day, like I didn't really realize how like when I was younger, I didn't realize how important coaching was to games. Like, I just was like, alright, the players go out and y'all playing the game. Like, man, coaching, like, especially seeing the difference between our run this year and last year, huge differ, huge difference. Like, that's a big difference coaches make.

SPEAKER_01

No, I completely agree. Completely agree.

SPEAKER_00

Like, yeah, he's just been getting outworked by Mike Brown this entire series. Like, he like Kenny Atkinson may or may lose his job this season.

SPEAKER_01

I think he should.

SPEAKER_00

I listen, I don't prey on people's doubt.

SPEAKER_01

Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. And you saw in the last series Donovan Mitchell had 40 and a half. Like, he's got the they have the opportunity to be good. They just aren't getting I don't think they're they have the right uh like what is it called? Ross. No, no, no, no, no. I'm so sorry. F off. No, no, no, uh, game plan. Like, I don't think they're preparing for how they should.

SPEAKER_00

No, yeah, like they like obviously, like, they they've had time to make adjustments. Like, obviously they they can they can be competitive in the series. They were up 22 in game one. Right. Like they were they stuck around for most of game two, like I'm not gonna lie, game three they kind of look lost out there. There was the did you see like the one play, like, like in the fourth quarter, Brunson's driving to the basket and the entire Cavs team is just standing.

SPEAKER_01

Nobody there, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like they literally, like, it looked like a pickback.

SPEAKER_01

They're just giving up. Like, truly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, straight giving up, and that that comes down, that comes down to your leadership.

SPEAKER_01

Right, and I feel like the reason why the Knicks are doing so well is because they play such like an isolated game. Like, a lot of it is one-on-one. Like, really. Like, I see like, yeah, there's like good ball movement here and there, but a lot of it is like fast break points and like getting ball in transition versus having like actually set up because that's how you win it.

SPEAKER_00

Like, they have guys running picks like crazy out there, like getting getting matchups that they want. Like, they like they they this team has the highest point differential through 10 games of any team all time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they had like even better than a row where they're or they beat people by 30.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, Yeah, like like we like what we beat Atlanta in game six by like 50 something points. Like straight.

SPEAKER_01

I can't tell you that one to six, I can't lie. No, I mean Atlanta's a they're dogs.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, I mean, it's adj adjustments, you know, like like and and besides the the two games we've lost in this playoffs were to to them were both one-point games. Like, and we had a chance to win at the end of both of those. So, like, there's there's a there's a reality here where we're undefeated in this playoffs.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and all that matters is like down the line, down the stretch. Whenever you gotta make those big times.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, when they honestly biggest biggest coaching like change that they made with like especially this playoff run, making like cat like the the offensive hub. Because like if you look at his assist numbers, his playoffs have been crazy. He's had two triple doubles.

SPEAKER_01

Everybody's everybody's drawn towards him. Like he's such a difference at the run.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, I I I know that he's not Nicole Jokic, but he's doing some Jokic type sh like he's that's how well he's been.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's really impacting the game. I wonder what his plus minus is. Oh, it's good. It's pretty good. He he creates like open lanes and he's creating like he makes he doesn't even score all that much. Yeah, I know. He just he just gravitates people towards him like all the time. You know, and he can still be on. He's just gotta be on.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, and he makes sure he stays out of foul trouble. He's been better about it recently. He's been way better about it. Yeah, but uh, you know, that's that was that was a huge problem last year, especially earlier in the playoffs. Like it's the whole thing.

SPEAKER_01

Like in general, the Knicks have gotten so much better about staying out of foul trouble. Obviously, you got your games here and there, but some of the refs, like some of the things.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, listen, Vegas has to make their calls, they gotta keep these guys in this series. You know, it's like it's only fun for us Knicks fans to see to see this absolute belt we're putting on people.

SPEAKER_01

So like Right. No. I I hope that next series is Spurs in Knicks. Oh, I mean I really hope.

SPEAKER_00

And that might be uh that might be a little good transition to the West.

SPEAKER_01

The West is so much more competitive.

SPEAKER_00

Game four last night, the Spurs, I don't know. Did you did you watch it? Because like the Spurs played.

SPEAKER_01

They were up, I turned it off when it was 175. There was like 20 minutes left.

SPEAKER_00

Shea didn't even play the entire fourth quarter. Like he had a DMP for the yeah, like they did not touch the floor, like they were down like about 20 something. Yeah, like I guess they waved the white flag. We're like, alright, like we'll see y'all in OKC.

SPEAKER_01

Because you're tying this is 2-2. This is like an important game. Like, whoever goes, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

If you pull up 3-1 on this team, like that's slow, and like you're going back to OKC. That's uh that's like a little bit of a dagger to the heart, you know?

SPEAKER_01

It's tough. It's tough.

SPEAKER_00

Like, and this series, this series in the city, that series has been like fun to watch for the most. So fun.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I've seen the best series in the playoffs.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like he was a double overtime thriller, you know, when being a good one.

SPEAKER_01

And then we went off overtime, we went off the Knicks game too the night before, the day after the game. Well, great back to back. Like great back to back.

SPEAKER_00

Great start to the conference finals for sure.

SPEAKER_01

No, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And it's so funny because both those gate both those game ones at the end of the regulation were 101. Like 101. Yeah, they were both the same same score. I didn't even know. Same score at the end of the regulation for both games. That's cool. Yeah, just insane moments. Like when Wembin Yam was a f monster. Yeah. Like the the shot he hit in game one in overtime, like when they were down three, like from the logo, you see it was Steph Curry's same shot he hit ten years ago. It's funny too, because J Dob in that game, like this the the the miss he had on the other end right before that, is like almost identical to the type of shot Russ took in that in that game.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, no, crazy. Chet did have a good block at the end of the game on website.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, those two have been at each other's necks. I know.

SPEAKER_01

I enjoyed them.

SPEAKER_00

Like, they've been like their their rival their rivalry's a little, I would say it's a little one-sided.

SPEAKER_01

Like, definitely.

SPEAKER_00

But this is like the new Chet's been Chet's had a great season. Like, yeah. All-star this year.

SPEAKER_01

He's so quiet.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's been quiet in this series for so far, man. Like, I don't know if I'm taking like if you're if you're looking to make some parlays, I think I would spade check like checkpoints.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

For for sure.

SPEAKER_01

I agree. I agree. Because he he needs to be like brought out. Like, I feel like that's what that's a key thing OKC is missing right now.

SPEAKER_00

They don't have like a really like they don't have like a dominant, like a playmaker like that. Like they have a lot of shot makers, they have a lot of people that can like, you know, that they have some guys that can create, like, obviously Shea, he's the MVP, but he's one of the best players in the world. Right. Caruso can like kind of get his own shot. Hot, he was terrible yesterday. Oh yeah. He cooled down a lot. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

He was before that, he was averaging like I think I saw it was like 21 or something.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he was like their he was like their main driving. Like in game one, he was their leading scorer.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And I feel like the Spurs don't have that coming off the bench.

SPEAKER_00

No, and like, I mean, both teams are dealing with some injuries. Yeah. Like, obviously, Fox missed the first two games. He's been pretty good since coming back. Um, AJ Mitchell right now is out for the Thunder, and he's like one of their another one of their guys off the bench that can get his own shot. He's been a hooper. J Dub's out again. J and yo, J Dub needs to step up the.

SPEAKER_01

I don't care.

SPEAKER_00

Yo, this kid also needs to step up what he's with, like, you know, his his outfits. Why is this guy on the bench with pajama pants on? I'm watching conference finals. I'm watching the game yesterday, and he's I'm gonna see him standing on the bench all like nonchalant, stomach, and he's just wearing pajama pants. Like, bro, what the f like I can't I can't even wear pajama pants when I'm bouncing. And it's like, and it's like you're an NBA player.

SPEAKER_01

Like you're some you're definitely should be like a dress code.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you're a live TV and it was a conference final and come on, man.

SPEAKER_01

Right. That's so insane. I didn't even peep that. That's so fing funny. I can't.

SPEAKER_00

But I don't know, it just it just stood out like OD to me.

SPEAKER_01

Like, this is still your job.

SPEAKER_00

I know this shit, I noticed sh comfy, but like, bro, like he wears celebratory. I swear to god, it's the same pants all the time.

SPEAKER_01

Like I would not be doing that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he needs to get some icy hot on that on that hamstring though, because they they're they need him. Like them playing with him and without him, like they've been pretty good the first two rounds without him. Like they've swept their way to the fuck conference line.

SPEAKER_01

I think they won one game against him in the regular season. Right?

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Yep, they they had their number the entire way.

SPEAKER_01

Like, but that doesn't matter anymore. Like, that's that is true. Hey, the Knicks last year.

SPEAKER_00

Knicks last year we lost every game to Boston and we still beat them in the playoffs. You know what? With or without the Tatum injury, we would have still won that series. That was an awesome series, I can't lie. I just hate Boston. Yeah, yeah. If you're a New Yorker, you kinda like by default have to not like Boston. Like, yeah, f those guys. They blew 3-1 lead to the Sixers, and I couldn't have been happy. I was I was in that I was in that bar watching it and I was just cheesing the whole time. Like, oh man, but yeah, that series is now tied to obviously like game, we're recording this on Monday. Happy Memorial Day, by the way. Um, but yeah, uh game four of Nick's Cavs is tonight. I think they're gonna I think they're gonna sweep boom.

SPEAKER_01

Um I think it'll be close, a close game. I think it'll be a good game. If the Cavs win, it's in overtime. Like, I don't think they do it in regulation. No, I really don't. But I can see it's like hard to win game, like win game four. Like, yeah, when you're down 3-0, even though they're not any scrapping, there's nothing to lose.

SPEAKER_00

Like, they've lost their own. The only game before game three they lost was game six to the Pistons. That was the only home game they lost in the entire playoffs up until that point.

SPEAKER_01

I was okay sad the Pistons lost.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, listen, we got a home court because of it. So that's that's something that's fine.

SPEAKER_01

That's cool.

SPEAKER_00

That was the that was my deciding fact as of who I wanted to play in this conference finals. We get home court versus Cleveland, we have to play at in Detroit against them. Like, you know.

SPEAKER_01

I just like to see the best teams play the best teams versus people getting unlucky playing, which that's the whole point of playoffs. You gotta play seven.

SPEAKER_00

Hey yo, yo, Mike Brown Mike Brown said it. He was like, he was like, listen, to make a playoff run like this, you had a pe one peak at the right time, you gotta, you know, get lucky with injuries, and you just need just luck in general. Yeah. Like look luck with a droll. Like that's that's that's the recipe to any any championship team, and like that's why I think it's stupid when people try to put asterisks on every because you can go back and do that for every single year. You can be like, oh yeah, this team was hurt, or this player was hurt, or they had to they got to you know, they had to play this team who like you know upset this one in the last one. It's like you can do that for every single championship in history, and then at that point it's like, alright, bro, f it. No one is a champion, bro. Nothing counts. Like, yo, yeah, all these championships, bro, they're all for it. Everyone ain't healthy, yo. We're canceling games until everybody is healthy.

SPEAKER_01

Like, that sounds fing stupid, doesn't it? No, you're so corrupt. You're so corrupt.

SPEAKER_00

It's like, man, I just fan I hate.

SPEAKER_01

People make excuses.

SPEAKER_00

I hate sports fans sometimes, man. I hate fans in general sometimes. Everybody sucks.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I'm a Wayrich fan and I've watched Curry have to sit out in the playoffs. And I yeah, I know. I know. But stay calm over there because we're not that good. Hopefully, Jimmy, hopefully, honestly, f Moses Moody comes back. Do you see his injury?

SPEAKER_00

Man, I honestly honestly, I think he'll need Jesus Christ himself of Nazareth to put some shoes on and you know, play on a court, especially the way yo, the way you know the Western Conference. I just like it.

SPEAKER_01

The Western is so much more competitive than the East. I love watching the West.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh. Like, and you know what, that's why everyone says it like every year that usually the champions are gonna come out of the Western Conference.

SPEAKER_01

They have like the new NBA, like they're all young, they are so competitive, they're all sober style. Whereas like the East, like and it's top heavy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Like the Eastern Conference, it's like the top teams are good and everyone else is just there.

SPEAKER_01

Right, no, exactly. You're just filling up the are the brackets for the West is always like pretty even. Or not it's like pretty even like whenever it comes to like the fifth plus seed. Whereas the East, like, you can see who's like Yeah, it's a lot easier to predict the Eastern Conference. The bottom half is evenly bad in the West.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man, but you know what? Listen, uh, as much as people love to glaze the West, man. Champion and coming out of Western Conference this year. Oh Nixon. Nixon's six of the finals, man. I d whoever we play. You know what? I will be there for that parade. It'll be the proudest moment of my life. Um, yeah, 7th Avenue is so fall National Guard right now. They need it, they need them on standby. Oh, they will. They are cooked, man. But honestly, like, okay, we both are in agreement, like, we're up 3-0, we're gonna come out of the East. Like, no matter if it takes, you know, tonight or game five in MSG. But they're not getting past five games.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_00

At the absolute worst. But like, you know, who do you who do you think now, after watching last night's game, is coming out of the West? Because this is that series going distance.

SPEAKER_01

It's going 7. Oh, it sucks because I really want the Spurs to win. I really do. I'm just not really like OKC is so good in roster, like on paper, they're the better team. But I think the Spurs they peek at the right times. Like, truly, like you said before, like, they know when to be on the line, so they just lock the b in. OKC, they go on a bad run, like they're kinda like heads are down other than Shay. That's it. Yeah, like you see, and he becomes a ball hog at times, and I don't think that's working better for them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it's it's tough with the the injuries they got right now. Yeah, exactly. I mean both those teams are probably coming going to the finals either way, hobbled. So Yeah. No, exactly. That's pretty good for us.

SPEAKER_01

Stephen Castle, please. Stay. I love watching him play.

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, so you got the Spurs winning in seven?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, man, I I mean, as much as I love, I would love for San Antonio. Listen, listen.

SPEAKER_01

I I know, I know I think I think for your second.

SPEAKER_00

I genuinely, like, if I'm being objective here, I think okay see, even though they played terribly last night, I think they are probably gonna finish it out.

SPEAKER_01

They always do.

SPEAKER_00

Cause like, and the the main thing is is like, yeah, these teams are very even, but the the Thunder, they've been here before. They won the title last year, they had a you know, good playoff from the year before. Like, this is like people really, you know, downplay how much experience plays a factor in a s in a close series like this. And I, you know, they play and OKC even last year, you know, they played tough opponents. Like they had they went to they got pushed to seven by the Nuggets, they got pushed to seven by the Pacers in the finals. Like, you know, they're battle tested. Yeah, those those boys, those boys are battle tested. They have almost the same roster. So I I think the Thunder, you know, they will they will find a way to echo out a win. You know, they got two more games at home.

SPEAKER_01

So like So if the Spurs win, I think Spurs are back. Like, I'm not like they are, I mean, they've been since they got winning.

SPEAKER_00

Those two are gonna be they're gonna be fighting in the wild.

SPEAKER_01

I think like this is gonna be an ongoing rivalry for you. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

This is gonna be the first of probably a lot of playoff matchups we see between these two teams.

SPEAKER_01

They're gonna probably be Cavs and Warriors all over again. I hope not.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. Don't take me back to those days. Yeah. Don't so bad year, one. I lost so much money back then.

SPEAKER_01

Well, how old were you?

SPEAKER_00

It was in like middle school.

SPEAKER_01

Like we were how were you just a dollar?

SPEAKER_00

I actually I actually had you know, I actually in 2017, the West Finals, I actually put like 20 bucks at the Spurs of with like one of my friends at the Spurs would beat the Warriors. And they looked good in game one, and then Kawhi got injured and then they got swept. But like, you know, like it's fine, it's fine. And then I and I for some reason thought Cleveland would be competitive in the finals. I said, you know what, let's run it back another 20.

SPEAKER_01

Alright.

SPEAKER_00

Lost again. They uh they got cooked. I knew after game one, I was like, fuck. I'm never seeing that $20 ever again.

SPEAKER_01

I've never won a bet. I don't know how.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, listen, when the mix wins.

SPEAKER_01

I would go four for five.

SPEAKER_00

But I also win 104 bucks.

SPEAKER_01

I prefer to put like 10 bucks down and make like a four or five leg parlay so I can actually win money versus winning ten bucks.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_01

I do like like little bets. You know what's my problem.

SPEAKER_00

That's fair. And you know what? I'd be doing a lot of like seven, eight leg parlays, and they'd be missing by one leg, and it's always Carl Anthony Towns, bro! Cat's big dude, catch a f rebound! But okay. Right, but yeah. Yeah, cat's cat cat might be on the ban list. I don't know. He ain't I don't know if I'm gonna do it.

SPEAKER_01

Let's see how he does tonight. I hope they blow him out, actually. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, I mean every closeout game that we've played so far against Atlanta and you know Philly have been 30-point blowouts, so I hey, well we'll see what happens tonight. And I will be there, and I'll probably have a little celebration video that goes on the Instagram after me once once again acting a fool.

SPEAKER_01

You should go to the watch parties in the city.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, oh, I oh, for the finals, I the for the finals I will be there, bro. I will be one of the degenerates. On 7th Avenue after the game.

SPEAKER_01

Look cool.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that would that would be that'd be gas. Yeah. I know both of them have asked me about that.

SPEAKER_01

Really? That's so funny.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, I'll be there for the final stuff. I'll be there for the parade. Like, trust me, like, this might be the only championship we ever see in our in my lifetime. And you know what? If it is, I'm fine with that.

SPEAKER_01

No. No, I think you guys would really prove yourselves with if you all got a chip. Because like I said at the start, you guys have been so unserious. Like, everybody's gonna like like, oh, the next playoff time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

No, I completely agree. It will be it's gonna it's gonna get more competitive. People are gonna want to be on the East.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Pacers will be back, the Celtics might do something. Yeah. Those more.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, injuries.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, uh, but yeah, I think this this is probably a good time to wrap this up.

SPEAKER_01

Word.

SPEAKER_00

Um, thank you for joining me.

SPEAKER_01

Of course, I had fun. I had fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, let's go next!

SPEAKER_01

Thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_00

Yup up. We'll see you guys next time. Peace and love.
